Lactones olefinic acyl chlorides

Not only acyl, but also alkoxycarbonyl radicals can be generated from the corresponding xanthates, and their capture by addition to olefins produces esters or lactones, depending on whether the addition reaction is inter-or intra-molecular [53]. Grainger and Innocenti found that xanthates derived from carbamoyl chlorides were difficult to make and handle but, by replacing the xanthate salt by a dithiocarbamate, better precursors for the desired aminocarbonyl radicals were obtained [54]. Irradiation with a tungsten lamp proved more efficient than chemical initiation with lauroyl peroxide and lactams of various sizes could be readily obtained, as illustrated by the... [Pg.219]

Warren has used a variation of his phosphine oxide-based olefination method to synthesise single isomers (E or Z) of unsaturated carboxylic acids.23 a-Diphenylphosphinoyl ketones (32) are reduced by sodium borohydride to give diastereomeric mixtures of the corresponding alcohols (33) and (34). These alcohols can be converted to the lactones (35) and (36) which can be separated and individually converted stereospecifically into (Z)-(37) and (E)-(38) alkenes by base treatment (Scheme 6). In many cases it is possible to reduce p-ketophosphine oxides (39) and enones (41) stereoselectively to the ery/Aro-alcohols (40) and (42), respectively, using sodium borohydride in the presence of cerium chloride (Scheme 7).24 An earlier report that reduction in the presence of cerium salts did not cause reversal of stereochemistry compared to reduction with borohydride alone appears to be true only of the compounds studied in that report. The carbanions of 3-hydroxypropylphosphine oxides (43) have been reported to undergo O- to C-acyl transfer to give the p-ketoalkylphosphine oxides... [Pg.80]

This methodology was initially applied to a synthesis of (—)-alloyohimbane (82) (Scheme 3.13) (29). Readily available levoglucosenone (75), a product of cellulose pyrolysis, was the starting material. Diels-Alder reaction of 75 with 1,3-butadiene afforded adduct 76 which underwent Wolff-Kishner elimination and subsequent acylation to provide the bicyclic enol ether 77. Hydrolysis followed by oxidation and saponification afforded hydroxymethyl lactone 78 which was then condensed with tryptamine to yield the amide diol 79. Periodate cleavage of the diol was followed by conversion to chloride 80 which was cyclized to afford lactam 81. Subsequent Bischler-Napieralski cyclization followed by hydrogenation of the olefin moiety afforded the target ( )-alloyohimbane (82). [Pg.213]
