The discovery of the phenomenal insecticidal activity of 1,1, l-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)-ethane (DDT), which occurred less than 10 years ago, opened up a new field of endeavor for the chemist, biologist, and toxicologist. The activity in this field is considerable, and a portion of it has been directed toward efforts-to locate useful insecticides among the fluorine-containing compounds. Some of the fluorine compounds known to be insecticidal were re-evaluated, other compounds were tested biologically for the first time, and new compounds were prepared to be subjected to such tests. 

For the purpose of this review, the compounds considered are distributed among the following sections 1,1,l-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-fluorophenyl)-ethane, analogs of 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-fluorophenyl)-ethane, and miscellaneous organofluorine compounds. The chemistry, insecticidal activity, and toxicity of these groups of compounds are considered in the order given. Much of the work in synthetic insecticides, especially the biological portion, is necessarily of an exploratory character, and hence will have to be supported before appraisals become final. 

Methoxychlor [1,1,l-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-methoxyphenyl)-ethane], benzene hexachloride (BHC), chlordan, and toxaphene are chlorinated compounds of recognized importance in the insecticide field. Other chlorinated compounds now undergoing-field testing experiments will, no doubt, soon be added to the list. The need for specific analytical methods is familiar to those concerned with the analysis of formulations containing one or more of the above insecticides.

Mirex photoreduction in air-saturated distilled water was considerably slower (20-400 days). Finally, Zepp et al. (44) reported that the photoinduced dehydrochlorination of 1,1, l-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-methoxyphenyl)ethane (me-thoxychlor) is greatly accelerated in natural waters with high DOM concentrations. 

Trichloroacetone, however, with methanethiol and hydrogen chloride immediately gives 1,1, l-trichloro-2,2-bis(methylthio)propane.
