Experimental studies of the electrocapillary curve are very numerous. Besides Lippmann, Paschen,1 Rothmund,2 S. W. J. Smith,8 Gouy,4 Frum-kin,5 Koenig,6 Butler, Ockrent, and others,7 Hansen and Williams,8 and many others have published results. By far the most comprehensive studies are still those of Gouy. This method of silver-assisted glycoside synthesis is a variation of the Koenigs-Knorr reaction, which uses silver carbonate. William Koenigs and Edward Knorr first reported their method in 1901.

The recent increase of interest in the use of Raman spectroscopy to investigate the structural properties of proteins arises largely from the technological improvement of the method and the availability of laser-equipped apparatus. Several reviews and reports appeared on this topic (see, e.g., Koenig, 1972 Koenig and Frushour, 1972 Tobin, 1972 Yu and Liu, 1972 Yu et a/., 1973 Chen et a/., 1973,1974 Peticolas, 1975 Chen and Lord, 1976 Van Wart and Scheraga, 1978 Lippert et al, 1975 Bandekar and Krimm, 1979 Porubcan et ai, 1978 Williams et aL, 1980 Williams and Dunker, 1981). The Raman spectrum of some proteins, but mostly of polypeptides, has been analyzed in several laboratories.
