In the area of organometallic chemistry, we begin with a procedure for the palladium-catalyzed animation of aryl halides and aryl triflates, illustrated by syntheses of N-HEXYL-2-METHYL-4-METHOXYANIUNE and N-METHYL-N-<4-CHLOROPHENYL)-ANILINE. The next procedure describes the synthesis of 1,2,3,4-TETRAHYDROCARBAZOLE by the palladium-catalyzed annulation of ketones with o-iodoaniline. Next, a procedure for the synthesis of 2,7-DIMETHYLNAPHTHALENE via the nickel-catalyzed coupling of aryl O-carbamates with Grignard reagents is presented. Both vinyl- and aryl triflates have been cross-coupled with 2-furylzinc chloride [26-28]. Since vinyl triflates are easily obtained from the corresponding ketones, they are useful substrates in Pd-catalyzed reactions. In the following example, a Negishi coupling of 2-furylzinc chloride and indol-5-yl triflate (22) provided an expeditious entry to 2-(5 -indolyl)furan (23). Protection of the NH in the indole ring was not required. A similar reaction was successful with pyridyl- and quinolinyl triflates. [Pg.272]

The insight that zinc ester enolates can be prepared prior to the addition of the electrophile has largely expanded the scope of the Reformatsky reaction.1-3 Substrates such as azomethines that quaternize in the presence of a-halo-esters do react without incident under these two-step conditions.23 The same holds true for acyl halides which readily decompose on exposure to zinc dust, but react properly with preformed zinc ester enolates in the presence of catalytic amounts of Pd(0) complexes.24 Alkylations of Reformatsky reagents are usually difficult to achieve and proceed only with the most reactive agents such as methyl iodide or benzyl halides.25 However, zinc ester enolates can be cross-coupled with aryl- and alkenyl halides or -triflates, respectively, in the presence of transition metal catalysts in a Negishi-type reaction.26 Table 14.2 compiles a few selected examples of Reformatsky reactions with electrophiles other than aldehydes or ketones.27... [Pg.293]

A direct and satisfactory procedure for tertiary alkyl-alkynyl coupling has been developed by Negishi and Baba, who used trialkynylaluminums readily obtainable from the corresponding alkynyllithiums and anhydrous AICI3 [92]. For instance, tris(l-hexynyl)aluminum underwent a remarkably clean reaction with 1-adamantyl bromide to produce cross-coupled product 96 in 96 % yield. It is noteworthy that the reaction enables novel geminal alkyl-alkynylation of ketones this reaction should find a considerable application in natural product synthesis (Sch. 60). [Pg.226]
