For normal commercial use, the metal may be cleaned by washing with kero-sine or Stoddard solvent. These, of course, remove only the oil. If the surface film must be removed, this can be done mechanically with a knife or chemically by washing with anhydrous alcohol. As a new surface film will form in a few minutes in air, this latter procedure is usually necessary only if the metal from which the sample is cut has been oxidized owing to improper storage. 

Dilution Solvent—Mixed xylenes, o-xylcne, and kero-sine were successfuUy used in the interiaboratory study on precision. 

The precision of this test method was determined by statistical analysis of interlaboratory results. Fourteen participating laboratories analyzed twelve samples in duplicate. Most laboratories performed the analyses at three different levels of dilution, namely, 1 mass % sample in solvent, 2 mass % sample and S mass % sample. In this study, dilution solvents were limited to mixed xylenes, o-xylene, and kero-sine. The most common source of organometallic standards was metal sulfonates.
