Whenever a significant compound has been synthesized a data sheet or data book page should be created for it. The format of a data sheet can vary according to personal preferences, but it should contain at least the following pieces of information  

An experimental procedure for the preparation of the compound, preferably in a style suitable for publication 

An appropriate range of spectroscopic and chromatographic data which is sufficient to characterize the compound. Full assignments of spectra should be entered in the data sheets as soon as the information is obtained, then when it comes to report writing most of the information required is on hand
