Kapton-like polyimides

From Table 11-1 we can see that mica creates higher parasitic capacitances despite a lower K, and that is clearly attributable to the smaller thickness of insulator typically required. The same happens when we use some of the modern, expensive, and yet popular polyimide (not polyamide ) insulators which are excellent thermal conductors, but are also very thin. These can be recognized by their typically amber color, and they come in various brand names like Kapton, Kinel, Upilex, Upimol, Vespel, and so on. 

In tape-automated bonding (TAB), the semiconductor die, fabricated with bumped interconnect pads, are positioned in apertures of a polymer-film tape, generally polyimide (Kapton , a registered trademark of DuPont), then gang-bonded to cantilevered beams that are formed by photodelineated metal pads on the tape. The tape (film) has sprocket holes along its sides similar to movie film and, like movie film, is handled on reels in automatic equipment for high-speed assembly. ...

Suda and Haraya (1997a) have formed flat CMS films from Kapton polyimide by pyrolysis at 1000°C in argon and in vacuum. The results from this study have shown that there was little difference in the permeation properties between membranes formed in argon purge and vacuum. Therefore, it is likely that the effect of pyrolysis atmosphere may be related to the properties of the precursor and the temperamrc profile used during pyrolysis.
