Jet launching

Or from the physics side by which physical mechanisms are jets launched from accretion disks How are the ejecta accelerated to Lorentz factors beyond 100 How are the magnetic fields at the emission site created Are they... [Pg.327]

Explosive Catapults are devices used for launching naval shipboard airplanes. Due to the lack of space aboard ships, it is impossible to have long enough runways to properly launch planes by ordinary means. Therefore, a catapult is used to impart sufficient initial velocity to the plane to launch it properly. Formerly, such catapults were operated by compressed air, but now expls are used. One method for launching planes is to fasten on the under side of the wings of a plane some rockets and then fire them at take-off time. This is now known as RATO (rocket-assisted take-off), but was formerly known as JATO (jet-assisted take-off)... [Pg.271]

Classification, Missiles are commonly classified by their launch and target environments, as well as by popular names. Other methods of classifying guided missiles are by trajectory, speed (subsonic, sonic or supersonic), propulsion (air breathers, usually jets or rockets), guidance (command, Inertial or homing), payload (such as nuclear, high explosive, or electronic jammer), and purpose (strategic or tactical, offensive or defensive)... [Pg.820]

Regulus. A surface-to-surface jet-powered guided missile developed for the US Navy in the 1950 s. It was equipped with a nuclear warhead and was launched from surfaced submarines or cruisers. It was essentially a pilotless aircraft with a range of about 500 miles. Designated RGM-6/15... [Pg.179]

The Shillelagh is powered by a solid fuel rocket motor and controlled by hot gas jet reaction. The warhead is an Qctol (see Vol 8, 06-R to 017-L) HEAT (shaped) charged. The missile length is 1.14m, diameter 152mm, and launch wt 27kg... [Pg.285]

Standard cyan ink-jet dyes are C.I. Acid Blue 9, 42090 [3844-45-9] and C.I. DirectBlue 199, 74190 [12222-04-7], C.I. Acid Blue 9 is characterized by a superior brilliancy of shade and high color strength, but this triphenylmethane dye exhibits a low lightfastness. Copper phthalocyanine dye C.I. DirectBlue 199 is suited for many applications due to its superior lightfastness and thermal stability. To improve its moderate waterfastness on plain paper, novel cyan dyes have been launched based on the differential solubility approach by introducing carboxyl groups into the phthalocyanine moiety [3,12],... [Pg.501]

The jets seem to be launched in the central region of the objects, either by the star itself or by the disk surface close to the star and it is thought that magnetic fields are responsible for the collimation of the thin jets. The detailed processes underlying the phenomenon are not well understood because of the inherent difficulties of treating magneto-hydrodynamic problems. [Pg.59]

X-wind a theoretical model in which wind from a central star and the inner edge of its accompanying accretion disk join together to form magnetized jets of gas capable of launching material above the disk at velocities of hundreds of kilometers per second. [Pg.362]

In addition to the gravitation of Earth a rocket launched from earth must also overcome the air resistance of the atmosphere, which means that the rocket equation for such cases is only an approximation. Planes, RAM and SCRAM jets which are propelled by jet engines, transport their fuel with them, but they also suck air in and use the oxygen from the air for the combustion of the fuel. They only carry the fuel but not the oxidizer with them. The rocket equation is not valid for such vehicles, which are referred to as air-breathing engines. [Pg.63]

Your jet climbs upward to avoid the missile, then dives for the ground. You can t shake the programmed missiles as they home in on your plane. You ll have to out-maneuver them or shoot them before they launch. But you d better be fast. Joystick required. [Pg.121]

Use the joystick to control the movement of the plane. The controls may seem a little confusing at first. You pull back to loop upward (counterclockwise) and push forward to loop down (clockwise), like a real airplane. The jet moves at a constant velocity—you can t speed up or slow down. Press the fire button to launch a missile at the heat seekers on the ground. [Pg.121]
