Physiological Effects.—Jalap resin is a local Irritant. It actB as a powerful and drastic purgative. To scammony it is closely allied, not only by its effects, but ulso by botanical affinities and chemical proparties. It is much Icsb irritant to the intestinal mucous membrane than gamboge and, therefore, Is a much safer purgative. [Pg.841]

Jalap is perhaps the mildest member of the group. It produces watery stools within 3 or 4 h, with little intestinal irritation and no gastric disturbance or much prostration. It has little taste and is therefore easily administered. It has been used in ascites, cerebral congestion, hypertension, and as adjuvant to anthelmintics. Scammony and its equivalent Ipomea are closely related to jalap. [Pg.162]
