Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi, bom Dec. 10, 1804, in Potsdam, Germany, died Feb. 18, 1851, in Berlin, Germany. [Pg.499]

Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi (1804-1851), German mathematical genius and the son of a banker, graduated from school at the age of 12, professor at Koenigsberg University. Jacobi made important contributions to number theory, elliptic functions, partial differential equations, and analytical mechanics. The crater Jacobi on the Moon is named after him. [Pg.341]

M. H. von Jacobi was the brother of the famous mathematician Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi, bom in a wealthy Jewish family in Germany. His father was the personal banker of Frederic Wilhelm III, King of Prussia. In 1837, M. H. von Jacobi came to St. Petersbiug via Konigsberg in Eastern Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia) and Dorpat (now Tartu, Estonia) where he held positions before. Jacobi stayed in Russia until the end of his life. [Pg.69]
