Ivermectin dosage

Ivermectin is exceptionally effective in very low dosages against nematodes and arthropod parasites in cattle and has been widely used for treatment of endo-and ectoparasites in cattle, sheep, goats, and swine (49). It is administered orally, parenterally, or as a pour-on preparation at dosages ranging from 0.2 to 0.6 mg/ kg bw. Ivermectin exhibits teratogenic effects in rat, rabbit, and mouse. 

Doramectin, unlike ivermectin components, possesses a double bond between C22 and C23 and a cyclohexyl ring on C25. This novel avermectin is intended for use in cattle and sheep in the form of a single subcutaneous injection at a dosage of 0.2 mg/kg bw, or in pigs in the form of a single intramuscular injection at a dosage of 0.3 mg/kg bw (58). 

Clorsulon (Fig. 4.9) is a benzenesulphonamide derivative recommended for treatment and control of adult and immature liver flukes in cattle and sheep (68). It is administered orally or subcutaneously at a dosage of 7 or 2 mg/kg bw, respectively, in association, frequently, with ivermectin. 

Over a number of years, ivermectin has shown excellent results in the treatment of onchocerciasis, both in controlled studies and in the field, including use in the WHO-sponsored program of treatment. This experience has provided a thorough picture of its adverse effects. The effective dosage is of the order of 50-200 micrograms/kg. After a single oral dose, skin microfilariae remain at low levels for up to 9 months.
