In 2014, nearly 51000 tons of itaconic acid was produced worldwide, with China as the main producer. The total market is estimated to achieve revenues of about US 126 million, which corresponds to an itaconic acid price of US 2.5 kg [9]. Also in 2015, the price was still in the same range of US 2-3kg . This is significantly higher than the 0.55 kg that was estimated in the year of 2004 to be the upper price limit to be competitive with petrochemically derived products [5]. Another important parameter mentioned in this context is volumetric productivity, which should be higher than 2.5 gl h to be economically competitive [5]. [Pg.454]
