Isolation from spent pulping liquors

S. cerevisiae strains with enhanced tolerance to spent sulfite liquor (SSL) were isolated from a pulp mill [173]. In these strains, the co-metabolism of glucose and galactose was enhanced by acetic acid at low pH. Despite considerable effort, it was not possible to identify any efficient xylose-utilizing strains in the pulp mill. [Pg.73]
