Irrigation isolation

In 1955 Edward Woodward found that 5% ethanol perfused through a dog s isolated antral pouch was a powerful stimulant of secretion by the oxyntic glands. In contrast, irrigation of one of two Heidenhain pouches in a dog with the same concentration of ethanol did not cause secretion by the other pouch. Woodward estimated that two-thirds of the gastric secretory response to dilute ethanol is mediated by release of gastrin from the antrum and one-third by the influence of ethanol on the intestine. ... 

Eye contact The eyes must be flooded immediately with copious quantities of clean water. Speed is essential. In isolated areas, water in a squeeze bottle, which can be carried in the pocket, is helpful for emergency irrigation purposes. Eye fountains should be used, but if they are not available, water may be poured over the eyes. In any case, the eyelids must be held open and irrigation must continue for at least 30 minutes. The patient must receive prompt attention from a physician, preferably an ophthalmologist. Persons subject to ammonia exposure should not wear contact lenses.
