Iron ore processing

A flow sheet for one iron ore process is shown in Fig. 20-56. For the grinding of softer copper ore the rod mill might be eliminated, both coarse-crushing and baU-milhng ranges being extended to fill the gap.

Frank Howard was also instrumental in the process research for Midgley s tetraethyllead antiknock additive, which led to Exxon s 50% ownership with General Motors of the Ethyl Corporation. Charles A. Kraus, an MIT staff member just before World War I, was its developer, and it appears that Doc Lewis found him for Exxon. Another Lewis idea later resulted in Exxon s fluidized bed iron ore process, commercialized after World War II only in Venezuela by the Arthur F. McKee Company. Someday, such a process might be incorporated in integrated steel minimills.

From these data it follows that when iron is precipitated in acid and neutral environments the first products should be X-ray-amorphous highly dispersed iron hydroxides, which in the course of time acquire the crystal structure of goethite or hematite. The mechanism of this process depends on kinetic factors (rate of oxidation of Fe " ), form of migration of the iron (ionic or colloidal), and acidity of the parent solution. In neutral environments ferrihydrite possibly is formed as an intermediate metastable phase, especially if the iron migrates in colloidal form or in the form of the Fe ion. The products of diagenesis of such a sediment may be both goethite (in the case of low Eh values typical of the Precambrian iron-ore process) and dispersed hematite (in the case of deposition of the oxide facies of BIF).

A material termed magnetite in the abstract is in fact a filter cake from an iron ore-processing plant (ill defined material).
