Iron monosulphide

Iron monosulphides then convert to pyrite (FeS2). At Eh below —2 50 mV (see Box 5.4) and at pH around 6, the conversion of FeS to FeS2 may occur via oxidation of dissolved FeS by hydrogen sulphide, for example ... 

It may be that this elemental sulphur is the source of polysulphides (S 2 ), which were proposed by Rickard (1975) to react with iron monosulphides and directly precipitate pyrite in euhedral form. This polysulphide is thought to result from the reaction of elemental sulphur and HS (Teder, 1971 Gigenbach, 1972). Luther (1991) suggests that the conversion from FeS to euhedral FeS2 occurs via a complex formed by FeS and S< since the step requires both FeS to be solubilised and a change in the electron configuration of the Fe(II). These laboratory studies seem to confirm Rickard s original mechanism. 

The most efficient fixation of trace metals in sediments takes place by association with sulphide. Although AVS is a metastable reduced sulphur form, it may be the controlling sediment property for metal (bio)availability in (anoxic) sediments. AVS includes amorphous iron monosulphide (FeS), crystalline mackinawite and pyrrhotite (FeS),... 

Lithium (aluminium) iron monosulphide secondary batteries 9/18... 

This battery is seen as a possible contender in the electric vehicle market. Eagle Richer, Gould and Argonne National Laboratory are involved in these developments. Of various samples studies the lithium (alu-minium)-iron monosulphide (LiAL-FeS) secondary system is the closest to commercial realization.
