Ionizing interaction with condensed matter

Interaction of Ionizing Radiation with Condensed Matter... [Pg.581]

Accelerated particles (ions, photons, electrons) interact with condensed matter and produce secondary species molecular ions, electrons, photons, radicals, and ionic species (Chapiro 1974, Sanche 2003). Figure 16.1 summarizes the interactions of radiation with a hypothetical diatomic molecule AB. As the primary radiation can ionize (1) or excite (2) the molecule, several relaxation mechanisms can occur to stabilize the molecule and return it to its ground state (i.e., AB AB+E,... [Pg.382]

Ionization of atoms or molecules is the main primary event induced by the interaction of radiations with condensed matter. The charged species produced by ionization, if not removed from the irradiated system, will naturally tend to recombine. The conventional theories of recombination treat the transport and reactions of charged species only after the electrons ejected from atoms or molecules become thermalized by dissipating their initially high kinetic energies to the surrounding medium and form a spatial distribution around their parent cations. The thermalization in condensed phases is fast and is usually... [Pg.259]

The organisation of this chapter is as follows. In Sect. 9.2 the principles of the interaction between ionizing radiation and condensed matter will be dealt with. In Sect. 9.3 the principles of several applications will be discussed and the material requirements specified. The preparation of the materials will concentrate on single crystal growth and will be discussed in Sect.9.4. Finally Sect. 9.5 will give a survey of the several materials in u.se and Sect. 9.6 will present a future outlook. For more details than presented here, the reader is referred to the proeeedings of a recent work.shop [IJ. [Pg.170]
