Photoemission (PE) and inverse photoemission (IPE) play a central role in the study of the outermost states because the corresponding transitions induce the lowest possible population change among these states only (fig. 3). In all other methods (fig. 4) the information about outer states extracted from the spectra accounts for a local DOS around atoms with an effective nuclear charge Z + I rather than for the unperturbed DOS. This difference increases when the states forming the considered band approach the localization limit. [Pg.11]

In simple terms, a chemisorption bond involves the hybridization of substrate and adsorbate orbitals (electron states), i.e. there are new bonding and antibonding states, some of which may be empty. The empty states are normally not seen by photoemission spectroscopy. They can be analyzed by inverse photoemission spectroscopy (IPES) in a manner analogous to PES. Angle, energy and polarization dependent measurements can be carried out to determine the 2d electron band stmcture of unoccupied states [86Fre, 89Memj. [Pg.33]
