Introduction and Scope

Since the first discoveries by Arthur and Pratt, the pioneers of this topic in 1952 [9], homogeneously catalyzed hydrocyanation has become a powerful tool in the synthesis of nitriles. 

This chapter focuses on the metal-catalyzed amination of alcohols and related compounds such as aminoalcohols, phenols and di- and polyhydroxy compounds. Details of the synthesis of amines with acidic catalysts, including zeolites, mixed oxides and metal phosphates, can be found elsewhere [3,5-7]. 

Much of the work on the subject of hydrogen bonding through the early 1970 s is summarized in several reviews and books [1 -7]. The determination of hydrogen- 

In keeping with the theme of this book, our emphasis will be on systematics, in particular the role of hydrogen bonding in molecular assembly, and so we concentrate on patterns and motifs of hydrogen bonds and their consequences rather than the numerical specifics of geometries.
