Adverse reactions to ingested or topically applied (injection into the peri-ovarian space or sub-capsular injection in rats) surfactants of the Triton series of non-ionic surfactants include the formation of cysts on rodent ovaries. Goldhammer and McManus [166] found that the dose of Triton X-100 that killed by intraperitoneal injection was 50 to l(X)-fold higher than that required intravenously - the higher toxicity of the latter route arising from haemolysis.
