This brief overview begs two questions with regard to biotransformations  

Why use whole cells themselves rather than the relevant enzyme complement  

Why use microbial cells rather than the cells of animals and plants  

The answer to the first question (Why use whole cells rather than isolated enzymes ) stems from problems associated with using some enzymes, especially intracellular enzymes (i.e. enzymes that normally function within the cells in which they are synthesized).
