Interpretation of an El spectrum involves a consideration of the chemical significance of the ions observed in the mass spectrum and then using this information to derive an unequivocal structure. For a detailed consideration of the interpretation of El mass spectra, the text by McLafferty and Turecek [7] is recommended. 

Here, the description of El is restricted to what is essential for understanding the ionization process itself [18,19] and the consequences for the fate of the ions created. The practical aspects of El and the interpretation of El mass spectra are discussed later (Chaps. 5, 6). 

The physicochemical aspects of the ionization process in general, ion internal energy, and the principles determining the reaction pathways of excited ions have already been addressed (Chap. 2). After a brief repetition of some of these issues we will go more deeply into detail from the analytical point of view. Next, we will discuss technical and practical aspects concerning the construction of El ion sources and sample introduction systems. Finally, this chapter directly leads over to the interpretation of El mass spectra (Chap. 6).
