Internally heated pressure vessels

Pressure storage tanks should be coirelated using /lb vs. w eight, much the same as other pressure vessels. Materials of construction, of course, would be another variable. Special internals, insulation, and internal heat exchangers should again be separated from the base cost of the tank. A vertical cylindrical, and mechanical agitated pressure vessel, equipped with baffles to prevent vortex formation is the most widely used fermenter configuration. The baffles are typically one-tenth of the fermenter diameter in widtli, and are welded to supports tliat extend from the sidewall. A small space between the sidewall and the baffle enables cleaning. Internal heat transfer tube bundles can also be used as baffles. The vessels must withstand a 45 psig internal pressure and full vacuum of -14.7 psig, and comply with the ASME code.

Pressure vessels and appurtenances should be constructed of stainless steel or other corrosion-resistant materials. Ideally, these steam generators should receive hot demineralized FW to minimize chemical treatment requirements. Alternatively, where a main boiler plant is installed, 100% steam condensate provides a good source of FW. In practice, it is very difficult to accurately control the correct amount of chemical feed. Chemicals are typically restricted to potable grade, deposit control agents such as polyacrylates, and other materials listed under the Code of Federal Regulations, CFR 21 173.310, or National Sanitary Foundation (NSF International) approval system. These boilers may be electrically heated or gas-fired. 

Failure of Heat Exchanger Tubes If a heat exchanger shell rating is less than the pressure level of the circulating medium and an internal heat exchanging tube ruptures or leaks it will overpressure the vessel.

When a pipe or vessel is totally filled with a liquid which can be blocked in, for instance, by closing two isolation valves, the liquid in the pipe or pressure vessel can expand very slowly due to heat gain by the sun or an uncontrolled heating system. This will result in tremendous internal hydraulic forces inside the pipe or pressure vessel, as the liquid is non-compressible and needs to be evacuated. This section of pipe then needs thermal relief (Figure 2.9).
