Shortly after MALDI was first reported in 1988, researchers became interested in interfacing MALDI to FTMS. Because MALDI can be performed in vacuum, it was easy to conceive of an internal MALDI experiment, in which the sample target was placed adjacent to the analyzer cell. Moreover, the pulsed nature of MALDI ion production lends itself well to the pulsed nature of FTMS analysis. Because MALDI produces predominately singly charged ions, analyte ion m/z increases linearly with analyte mass. Early MALDI developments focused on increasing the upper mass hmit and improving resolution and... [Pg.377]
