Once entered in the bulk metal, hydrogen starts its demolishing action unless an appropriate thermal treatment is carried out just to ehminate it.

Basically, tliere are two classes of anunonia converters, tubular and multiple bed. The tubular bed reactor is limited in capacity to a maximum of about 500 tons/day. In most reactor designs, the cold inlet synthesis gas flows tlirough an annular space between the converter shell and tlie catalyst cartridge. This maintains the shell at a low temperature, minimizing the possibility of hydrogen embrittlement, which can occur at normal synthesis pressures. The inlet gas is then preheated to syntliesis temperature by the exit gas in an internal heat e.xchaiiger, after which it enters tlie interior of the anunonia converter, which contains tlie promoted iron catalyst. 

A simple cell design is required to reduce capital costs. The cost of the raw materials, HF and electricity, are not negligible, but they are minor. The pilot plant cell design shown in Fig. 16 is derived from the callandria cell developed for the Phillips ECF process.14 The cell body and internals are of mild steel pipe selected to be resistant to hydrogen embrittlement. Figure 17 is a horizontal section through the working part of the cell.

Many ammonia synthesis converters operate at 150 to 200 bar and around 515°C. Under these conditions, nitriding and hydrogen embrittlement can occur. The pressure shell is a multi-layer or multi-wall carbon steel vessel. The internal catalyst baskets, contained in the shell, are made of SS 321 material88. 

E. SNAPE obtained his BS and PhD degrees in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Leeds in 1965. During his research career with Inco, he received numerous awards for his work on stress corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement, and became an international authority on this subject. In 1974, Dr. Snape pioneered the development of a waste reclamation process which now is being applied to the recovery... 

Internal blisters may occur if large amounts of hydrogen collect in localized areas. Small amounts of dissolved hydrogen may also react with microstructural features of alloys to produce failures at applied stress far below the yield strength. All these phenomena are referred to as hydrogen embrittlement.
