Kemp and coworkers employed the pulse radiolysis technique to study the radiolysis of liquid dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) with several amines as solutes [triphenylamine, and N, A, A, N -tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine (TMPD)]. The radiolysis led to the formation of transient, intense absorptions closely resembling those of the corresponding amine radical cations. Pulse radiolysis studies determine only the product Ge, where G is the radiolytic yield and e is the molar absorption. Michaelis and coworkers measured e for TMPD as 1.19 X 10 m s and from this a G value of 1.7 is obtained for TMPD in DMSO. The insensitivity of the yield to the addition of electron scavenger (N2O) and excited triplet state scavenger (naphthalene) proved that this absorption spectrum belonged to the cation. [Pg.895]

As stated in Chapter 1, transitions involving a change in multiplicity are spin forbidden. However, for reasons which we will consider later, such transitions do indeed occur although with very low transition probabilities in most cases. The intensity of an absorption corresponding to a transition from the ground state S0 to the lowest triplet state Tx is related to the triplet radiative lifetime t ° by the following equation[Pg.114]

The fluorescent components are denoted by I (intensity) followed by a capitalized subscript (D, A or s, for respectively Donors, Acceptors, or Donor/ Acceptor FRET pairs) to indicate the particular population of molecules responsible for emission of/and a lower-case superscript (d or, s) that indicates the detection channel (or filter cube). For example, / denotes the intensity of the donors as detected in the donor channel and reads as Intensity of donors in the donor channel, etc. Similarly, properties of molecules (number of molecules, N quantum yield, Q) are specified with capitalized subscript and properties of channels (laser intensity, gain, g) are specified with lowercase superscript. Factors that depend on both molecular species and on detection channel (excitation efficiency, s fraction of the emission spectrum detected in a channel, F) are indexed with both. Note that for all factorized symbols it is assumed that we work in the linear (excitation-fluorescence) regime with negligible donor or acceptor saturation or triplet states. An external magnetic field was observed to have practically no effect on the intensity of the thianthrene (430 nm) emission, indicating that no triplet states are involved. The spectrum of ReiCls 2 was recomputed with the inclusion of spin-orbit coupling, leading to no change of the qualitative features of the spectrum. There is a small shift in the energies and intensities, but we do not see any new states with intensities appreciably different from zero.
