Boron monofilaments (about 20 vol.%) were used by Tredway and Prewo to reinforce borosilicate glass [84]. They also introduced carbon fibre yarn to fill in the glass-rich regions between monofilaments in order to toughen the matrix and provide additional structural integrity of the composite.

Perspectives of sensor yarns integration inside fibrous reinforcement used inside composite materials are also being investigated. By increasing the sensor yarn resistance to yam to yam friction, the monitoring of woven fabric could be done after a resin impregnation process. Thus online and in-situ monitoring system of final composite preform could be also a new option of the sensor yam s use.
