It is very common for inorganic chemists to neglect or ignore the presence of solvent molecules coordinated to a metal centre. In some cases, this is just carelessness, or laziness, as in the description of an aqueous solution of cobalt(ii) nitrate as containing Co ions. Except in very concentrated solutions, the actual solution species is [Co(H20)6] . In other cases, it is not always certain exactly what ligands remain coordinated to the metal ion in solution, or how many solvent molecules become coordinated. The second part of this chapter focuses on actinide chemistry, where we start by describing some triatomic molecules containing a uranium atom, which have been studied both in the gas phase and in rare gas matrices. Most of actinide chemistry occurs, however, in solution, so we then describe actinide ions in solution. The extensive study of the multiple bond between two uranium atoms in the U2 molecule and in other diactinides is then reported. Chemical relaxation methods can be used to determine mechanisms of reactions of ions at the mineral/water interface. In this paper, a review of chemical relaxation studies of adsorption/desorption kinetics of inorganic ions at the metal oxide/aqueous interface is presented. Plausible mechanisms based on the triple layer surface complexation model are discussed. Relaxation kinetic studies of the intercalation/ deintercalation of organic and inorganic ions in layered, cage-structured, and channel-structured minerals are also reviewed. In the intercalation studies, plausible mechanisms based on ion-exchange and adsorption/desorption reactions are presented steric and chemical properties of the solute and interlayered compounds are shown to influence the reaction rates.
