Simon, Hamann., and Cair have used CSHELL to study low-mass pre-main-sequence (PMS) binaries. They have taken advantage of CSHELL s sub-arcsecond resolution to spatially resolve the infrared companions of T Tau and other similar systems in the Br 7, CO u = 2-0, and Nal 2.2 nm features in order to learn more about the natures of these IR-luminous companions. 

CO2 is measured by acidifying a seawater sample. This converts all the bicarbonate and carbonate ion into CO2. The CO2 gas is stripped out of the water sample by bubbling with an inert gas and then swept through either a coulometer or infrared analyzer for quantification. Alternatively, 2CO2 can be calculated from two easily measurable concentrations, pH and alkalinity. (See the online appendix on the companion website for the equations.)... 

Haaland also measured the infrared spectra of benzene adsorbed on Pt/Al203 that had been regenerated after previous benzene/cyclohexane adsorptions (247) the surface was thought to retain structured carbonaceous deposits. In this case, the broad yCH feature was centered at ca. 3030 cm 1 (with components at 3042, 3031, 3024, and 3014 cm 1) rather than 3040 cm 1 for the species on the freshly prepared catalyst, and a weaker companion band occurred at 2947 cm-1. The benzene absorption bands at wavenumbers <1500 cm 1 were little changed in position but become more prominent in room-temperature spectra in which the 2947-cm 1 feature was weakened. Spectra measured over the range 300-650 K showed that the 2947-cm 1 feature disappeared at 435 K, whereas the vCH aromatic bands retained considerable intensity at temperatures up to 560 K.

Toward filling these voids, we have developed several fast thermolysis/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques that permit near real-time studies of energetic materials heated at 70-400 C/sec under selected pressures in the 1-1000 psi range. These techniques are described in the companion article for this Institute. 

Further, Figure 1 contains a companion infrared spectrum of the condensation product of dibutyltin dichloride and dextran. This spectrum appears strikingly similar to that of the product derived from sucrose. This is reasonable since the major structural difference is the presence of five membered rings in sucrose compared to only six membered rings present in dextran.

A NEAR-INFRARED IMAGING SEARCH FOR LOW MASS COMPANIONS TO HYADES STARS... 

Smith (NASM), Mazeh, Zucker (Tel-Aviv U.), and Latham (CfA) have used CSHELL to seardi for brown dwarf companions to nearby stars. They are now analyzing spectra of brown dwarf companion candidate stars with a 2-D cross-correlation technique that can extract the velocity of a companion whidi contributes only 1% of the total flux. Contrast between primary and secondary stars is mazdmumin the near-infrared wavelengths they observed.
