Infrared absorption carbonyl stretching frequencies

Run infrared spectra of pure acetone and of pure propan-2-ol. From them select an absorption band for acetone which does not overlap significantly with any of those for the propan-2-ol. The best band is most probably that at 1718 cm-1, the carbonyl stretching frequency. 

The chromatograph (Waters Associates) was fitted with PL Gel columns (Polymer Laboratories Ltd.) and two Infrared detectors in series. Chloroform was used as the eluant. Infrared detectors were used because the tin containing acrylic mommier has a characteristic carbonyl stretching frequency at 1620 cm which is well removed from that of other acrylic monomers which have, carbonyl absorptions at the more characteristic wavenumber 1720 cm . Both peaks obeyed the Beer Lambert law. A typical chromatogram showing the separation of residual monomers and polymer Is shown in Figure 1. 

The most obvious feature in the infrared spectrum of a carboxylic acid is the intense carbonyl stretching absorption. In a saturated acid, this vibration occurs around 1710 cm-1, often broadened by hydrogen bonding involving the carbonyl group. In conjugated acids, the carbonyl stretching frequency is lowered to about 1690 cm-1. 

The carbonyl stretching frequency for l,3,4-oxadiazin-2-ones is seen at 1660-1710cm <2003CHE1057>. The main infrared (IR) absorption bands for some substituted 47/-l,3,4-thiadiazines have been assigned <2003SL2392>.

One of tire distinguishing physical characteristics of the cephalosporins is the infrared stretching frequency of the /i-lactam carbonyl. This absorption occurs at higher frequencies (1770-1815 cm-1) than those of either normal secondary amides (1504-1695 cm-1) or ester carbonyl groups (1720-1780 cm-1).
