There is a curious discrepancy in the archives of the Society concerning the General Discussions. In the index of Volume III for 1907 two general discussions are recorded, one on " Osmotic Pressure, one on Hydrates in Solution . Sir OUver Lodge was then President of the Society. In the index to the first twenty volumes of the Transactions the earhest recorded General Discussion is in Volume IV, on The Constitution of Water . 

The reader will notice, from the Contents, that the arrangement of the syntheses is rather arbitrary. It is advisable to seek particular compounds in the Subject or Formula Indexes. The indexes in this volume cover only this volume (Volume XI). The cumulative indexes of Volume X should be consulted for compounds in Volumes I through X, in clusively. It is planned that the indexes in Volumes XI through XV be cumulative back to Volume XI. 

Early chemical indexes were sorry specimens as compared with today s best. The preface to the cumulative index of Volumes 1 to 100 (1832-56) of Liebig s Annalen der Chemie complained that the first two collective indexes (for Volumes 1 to 40, 1842, and Volumes 41 to 70,1851) were appallingly bad. A few simple rules for better chemical indexing were prescribed and followed. 

Another typical example of the indexing in the Bibliography is furnished by a search for vinylacetylene. In the index to the first volume of the Bibliography, entries for this subject are found under Monovinylacetylene. In the second volume, pertinent entries occur under both Monovinylacetylene and Vinyl acetylene. The subject index of Volume 3 switches to the form Acetylene, vinyl-. In the fourth volume, the compound is indexed as l-Buten-3-yne ...
