Cross-linked macromolecular gels have been prepared by Eriedel-Crafts cross-linking of polystyrene with a dihaloaromatic compound, or Eriedel-Crafts cross-linking of styrene—chloroalkyl styrene copolymers. These polymers in their sulfonated form have found use as thermal stabilizers, especially for use in drilling fluids (193). Cross-linking polymers with good heat resistance were also prepared by Eriedel-Crafts reaction of diacid haUdes with haloaryl ethers (194). [Pg.563]

Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose [9004-32-4] (CMC) and hydroxyethyl cellulose [9004-62-0] (HEC) are the ceUulosics most widely used in drilling fluids (43). CMC is manufactured by carboxymethylation of cellulose which changes the water-insoluble cellulose into the water-soluble CMC (44). Hydroxyethyl cellulose and carboxymethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose (CMHEC) are made by a similar process. The viscosity grade of the material is determined by the degree of substitution and the molecular weight of the finished product. [Pg.179]

Acrylate and acrylamide polymers have several uses in drilling fluids, one of which is for filtration control. Sodium polyacrylates [9003-04-7] having molecular weights near 250,000 are exceUent temperature-stable filtration control agents for both fresh- and salt water muds, provided the concentration of water-soluble calcium is <400 mg/L (83). The calcium ions are precipitated using a carbonate such as soda ash, before adding the polyacrylate at concentrations up to ca 6 kg/m (3 Ib/bbl). [Pg.181]
