In-cell hydrocarbon oxidation

Spinnel et cd. further developed the modular PFE approach for dioxin analysis. A matrbc retainer module filled with sulfuric acid impregnated silica gel was introduced between the sample. In this case, salmon muscle was mixed with sodium sulfate and the carbon trap. This procedure provided extracts clean enough to be analysed by GC-HRMS (high-resolution mass spectrometry) analysis after solvent evaporation to an appropriate final volume. 

The results obtained were in good agreement with those of a Soxhlet reference method. A slightly higher total dioxin equivalency concentration was obtained for the modular PFE (89.3 8.3 pg/g fresh weight) than for Soxhlet extraction (81.3 7.8 pg/g fresh weight), which indicate an improved extraction efficiency of the PFE method (Spinner, 2008).
