Improper prior

However, in many cases the pyrolysis products are amorphous. For instance, the polysilazane-derived silicon carbonitride mentioned above crystallizes only when it is heated above 1450 C, and its characterization is difficult. Elemental analysis poses problems, in part because the pyrolysis product is very porous. As a result of its high surface area, the material adsorbs moisture and volatiles very readily, and improper prior handling and preparation for analysis can result in misleading results. [Pg.569]

The prior distribution p 0 C) denotes the prior information of the parameters and it is based on previous knowledge or user s judgement. In some applications, the prior distribution is treated as a constant and it is absorbed into the normalizing constant but this type of prior distribution does not satisfy the property of the PDF that its integral throughout the parametric space is unity. In general, a prior distribution that does not satisfy this property is referred to as an improper prior. Using a constant improper prior distribution yields the maximum likelihood solution. [Pg.21]

Consider a special case of a rare event that did not happen in the previous N years. By using the Poisson model again, the most probable value of the occurrence rate is equal to zero, i.e., X = 0. However, this does not imply that the event will never happen. By Equation (2.61) with an improper prior, the posterior PDF of A, is ... [Pg.31]

Here, an improper prior is used and it is absorbed into the normalizing constant. Also, the model class C describes all the assumptions made for the measurements and the noise model. It is clear that the posterior distribution for Q is Gaussian with mean (2i + Qi)l2. The variance is CTq/2 and it does not depend on the values of Si and Sz-Now, consider the case with Si = C S2 = 5 and = 0.01. By Equation (2.66), the mean and variance are 3 and 0.005, respectively. Figure 2.13 shows the posterior PDF for three cases (1) using 1 only (the peak on the left hand side), (2) using S2 only (the peak on the right hand side), and (3) using both Si and S2 (the peak in the middle). The posterior variance with... [Pg.32]

The actual value of ao is taken to be 1.0. In order to have a fair ground for comparison with the least-squares method, an improper prior is taken so the updated PDF for the uncertain... [Pg.42]

However, there are situations such as when we have a hierarchical normal model where improper priors should not be used for variance components. This will be discussed more fully in Chapter 10. [Pg.12]

Finding the posterior using independent Jeffrey s priors. Jeffrey s prior for /X is the improper prior... [Pg.81]

In the hierarchical model, the parameters of the parameter distribution are known as hyperparameters. We don t really have a great deal of prior information about the hyperparameters. We might think that improper priors would be appropriate. Unexpectedly however, this approach can lead to trouble. [Pg.253]

We should always use proper priors in the hierarchical model, particularly for scale parameters. When improper priors are used in the hierarchical model and the Gibbs sampler is used, each node looks like it has a proper posterior. However, overall, the posterior is improper. This means the Gibbs sampler represents a Markov chain that has all null recurrent states so it does not have a steady state distribution to converge to. [Pg.257]

Improper backwash. Blowoff of resin from the vessel during the backwash step can occur if too high a backwash flow rate is used. This flow rate is temperature dependent and must be regulated accordingly. Also, adequate time must be allotted for backwashing to insure a clean bed prior to chemical injection. [Pg.387]

Errors in the molecular weight data from HPSEC are usually due to improperly prepared samples, column dispersity, or flow rate variations. The sample to be analyzed should be completely dissolved in the mobile phase and filtered prior to injection onto the column. A plugged column inlet frit will invalidate results. In addition, do not load the column with excess sample. Column overloading affects the accuracy of data by broadening peaks, reducing resolution, and increasing elution volume. For best results, the concentration of the injected sample should be as low as possible while still providing adequate... [Pg.82]

In order to avoid placing tissues in the area of the slide that the spray pipeter did not predictably reach, they should be placed in the center of the slide. The nozzles of the spray pipeter occasionally had improper spray patterns and had to be rejected. This was detected prior to run initiation using a quality-control test recommended by the manufacturer. In addition, the amount of fluid dispensed by the pipeter varied as much as 11% less than the 100 pL that should be delivered to one square on a slide. This should be regularly monitored using techniques described in Subheading 2.3.2. [Pg.453]

Nutrient deficiencies are difficult to research in humans because the test subject would have to be removed from that nutrient for an extended period of time, possibly to leading a state of starvation. Thus, clinical deficiencies of n-3 fatty acids have been reported by only two researchers. Both of these studies involved one patient each and different clinical symptoms were observed in the patient prior to ALA supplementation (Bjerve et al., 1988 Holman et al., 1982). Thus, our knowledge of symptoms of ALA deficiency is not complete. Furthermore, a complete removal of ALA may not be required for the manifestation of clinical symptoms related to an improper balance between ALA and other fatty acids in the diet. Many of these symptoms can be related to the overproduction of the proinflammatory eicosanoids, synthesized from fatty acids other than ALA, resulting in heart disease and cancer (Morris, 2003b). [Pg.21]
