Iliad

You see, I d got this idea for The Iliad and The Odyssey. Licensing a translation. Would have been a big outlay, but Penguin had done well with theirs. Seemed to me we d find buyers for a really fine edition with a good translation. And because he d had a proper education—Latin and Greek and everything—I asked Lionel about it. About which were the good translations of Homer. And he said... Una, love, are you sure you want to hear this ...

Homer s Iliad relates how Hephaistos, the lame god of fire, made a shield for Achilles And he threw bronze that weareth not into the fire, and tin and precious gold and silver.. .. Among the many decorations on the shield was a vineyard scene in gold and silver with a fence of tin and a herd of cattle, and the kine were fashioned of gold and tin.. .. The greaves were of pliant tin (66). This may have been a tin alloy, however, rather than the pure metal (62).

It is then beyond doubt that the Chemical Art of Hermes was known among the Egyptians. It is scarcely less certain that the Greeks who travelled in Egypt learned it there, at least some of them and that, having learned it from hieroglyphics, they taught it under the veil of fables. Eustathius implies this in his commentary on the Iliad. 

Turning now to Europe, it appears that Greece was the first country to use iron, namely, about 1400 b.c. 5 Homer (b.c. 880) was thoroughly familiar with the metal, and frequently alludes to it in both his Iliad and Odyssey. Iron, gold, and bronze are repeatedly mentioned as indicative of wealth at the time of the Trojan war, which was fought at the transition of the Grecian bronze and iron ages, namely, c. 1400 to 1200 b.c. 

Ebers Papyrus, 1500 bc the oldest well preserved medical document from ancient Egyptian records dated from approximately 1500 bc contains 110 papyrus pages on anatomy and physiology, toxicology, spells, and treatment. Homer, 850 bc wrote of the use of arrows poisoned with venom in the epic tales of The Odyssey and The Iliad. The Greek word toxikon is arrow poison.

The latter then recites a long anaphoric hymn to Hermes, in which almost all the god s attributes appear ... 

Literature and history record many famous forest and urban fires [82, 634], Urban fires also exist in myth and legend. Stories about the Fall (burning) of Troy about 1200 BC were told orally for several hundred years before Homer composed his brilliant epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, about the Greek heroes who conquered Troy and the Trojan...
