With teclmological advances, Raman spectroscopy now has become a field tool for geologists. Mineral characterization for terrestrial field work is feasible and a Raman instrument is being designed for the next rover to Mars, scheduled for 2003. 

A force field that can produce vibrational spectra has a second advantage in that the Ay// calculations can be put on a much more satisfactory theoretical base by calculating an enthalpy of formation at 0 K as in ab initio procedures and then adding various thermal energies by more r igorous means than simply lumping them in with empirical bond enthalpy contributions to Ay//-. The stronger the theoretical base, the less likely is an unwelcome surprise in the output. 

New data, reportedly issued by Soviet scientists, have reduced the half-life of the isotope they worked with from 0.3 to 0.15 s. The Dubna scientists suggest the name kurchatauium and symbol Ku for element 104, in honor of Igor Vasilevich Kurchatov (1903-1960), former Head of Soviet Nuclear Research.
