Ma.nufa.cture. AU. manufacturers of butynediol use formaldehyde ethynylation processes. The earliest entrant was BASF, which, as successor to I. G. Farben, continued operations at Ludwigshafen, FRG, after World War II. Later BASF also set up a U.S. plant at Geismar, La. The first company to manufacture in the United States was GAF in 1956 at Calvert City, Ky., and later at Texas City, Tex., and Seadrift, Tex. The most recent U.S. manufacturer is Du Pont, which went on stream at La Porte, Tex., about 1969. Joint ventures of GAF and Hbls in Mad, Germany, and of Du Pont and Idemitsu in Chiba, Japan, are the newest producers. [Pg.106]

Idemitsu Process. Idemitsu built a 50 t x 10 per year plant at Chiba, Japan, which was commissioned in Febmary of 1989. In the Idemitsu process, ethylene is oligomerised at 120°C and 3.3 MPa (33 atm) for about one hour in the presence of a large amount of cyclohexane and a three-component catalyst. The cyclohexane comprises about 120% of the product olefin. The catalyst includes sirconium tetrachloride, an aluminum alkyl such as a mixture of ethylalurninumsesquichloride and triethyl aluminum, and a Lewis base such as thiophene or an alcohol such as methanol (qv). This catalyst combination appears to produce more polymer (- 2%) than catalysts used in other a-olefin processes. The catalyst content of the cmde product is about 0.1 wt %. The catalyst is killed by using weak ammonium hydroxide followed by a water wash. Ethylene and cyclohexane are recycled. Idemitsu s basic a-olefin process patent (9) indicates that linear a-olefin levels are as high as 96% at C g and close to 100% at and Cg. This is somewhat higher than those produced by other processes. [Pg.440]

Polycarbonates are an unusual and extremely useful class of polymers. The vast majority of polycarbonates are based on bisphenol A [80-05-7] (BPA) and sold under the trade names Lexan (GE), Makrolon (Bayer), CaUbre (Dow), and Panlite (Idemitsu). BPA polycarbonates [25037-45-0] having glass-transition temperatures in the range of 145—155°C, are widely regarded for optical clarity and exceptional impact resistance and ductiUty at room temperature and below. Other properties, such as modulus, dielectric strength, or tensile strength are comparable to other amorphous thermoplastics at similar temperatures below their respective glass-transition temperatures, T. Whereas below their Ts most amorphous polymers are stiff and britde, polycarbonates retain their ductiUty. [Pg.278]

The roster of PPS suppHers in Japan is much larger than in the United States. Multiple market presences in Japan include TOPPS (Toray PPS, formerly TO—PP, which was a joint venture between Toray and Phillips) Dainippon Ink and Chemicals, Inc. Tosoh Tohpren Kureha/Polyplastics and Idemitsu. PPS marketed by Toray is sold under the Torelina trademark. Production capacity in Japan was estimated in 1995 at 11,400 t of neat resin per year. At the time that this capacity was created, the situation in Japan was characterized by overcapacity and underutilization. Additionally, further PPS capacity was brought on by Sunkyong in Korea, which is marketing a low cost PPS product. Although excess PPS capacity still exists in Japan, market growth has narrowed the gap between supply and demand. [Pg.442]

Some of the principal Japanese producers of benzene are Mitsubishi Petrochemical Co., Ltd., Nippon Steel Chemical Co., Ltd., Sanyo Petrochemical Ltd., and Idemitsu Kosan Ltd. Until 1967, the main source of Japanese benzene was coal-based. Today, approximately 40—45% of benzene production in Japan is based on pyrolysis gasoline (74), about 40% catalytic reformate, and the remainder coke oven light oil and thermal hydrodealkylation. [Pg.44]

In the last few years, Idemitsu commercialized a 5000 metric ton/year integrated reaction and separation process in SCR isobutene, as shown in Rig. 22-24. The reaction of isobutene and water takes place in the water phase and is acid catalyzed. The product, sec-butanol, is extracted into the isobutene phase to drive the reversible reaction to the right. The. s c-butanol is then recovered from the isobutene by depressurizing the SCR phase, and the isobutene is recompressed and recycled. [Pg.2004]

The first production of syndiotactic polystyrene has been credited to research workers at Idemitsu Kosan in 1985 who used cyc/opentadienyl titanium compounds with methyl aluminoxane as catalyst. [Pg.454]
