In 1980 the APA produced a detailed analysis of the iatrogenic disease in its Task Force Report Tardive Dyskinesia. The task force made it clear that TD is a serious, usually irreversible, largely untreatable, and highly prevalent disease resulting from therapy with neuroleptics. The task force estimated the prevalence rate for TD in routine treatment (several months to 2 years) as at least 10% to 20% for more than minimal disease. For long-term exposure to neuroleptics, the rate was at least 40% for more than minimal disease. [Pg.57]

X As surgical skills and techniques became perfected, more difficult and more destructive operations were devised and employed to cure new iatrogenic diseases. The progression from clitoridectomy to colectomy and thence to lobotomy —as methods of treatment" not only for insanity but also for a host of other iatrogenic diseases—illustrates this principle. We may thus distinguish between... [Pg.191]

The pain, dysfunction, disability, and anguish resulting from technical medical intervention now rival the morbidity due to traffic and industrial accidents and even war-related activities, and make the impact of medicine one of the most rapidly spreading epidemics of our time. Amongst murderous institutional torts, only modem malnutrition injures more people than iatrogenic disease in its various manifestations. [Pg.12]
