Oikawa and Yonemitsu reported a general method for the synthesis of 2-hydroxy-carbazoles (529) by the acid-catalyzed cyclization of the p-keto sulfoxide 528 (511). The required p-keto sulfoxide was derived from nucleophilic attack of dimethyl sulfoxide on methyl 3-indolepropionate. 

A soln. of 6-keto-5-ethyl-5-dimethyl-amino -4 - methyl - 4 - hydroxy - 5,6 - dihydro - 4H- pyrido [3,2,1 - jk] carbazole (obtained from the hydrochloride with aq. NaOH) in ethanol treated with aq. 6.5 N NaOH, and refluxed 4 hrs. 1-acetylcarbazole.
