Villiger reactions.249 Acetophenones may be converted readily into phenyl acetates,250 which may be hydrolysed to phenols in their own right, e.g. hydroquinone monoacetate (HQMA) (Figure 3.54).

The yield of (108) is 89%. Because the monoacetal is easily converted to the quinone, the yield of 5-hydroxy-l,4-naphthoquinone [481-39-0] is 64%.

Resorcinol allergic contact dermatitis is infrequent despite widespread exposure to this compound in acne remedies, hair tonics, cosmetics, and suppositories. Crossreactions occur with resorcinol monoacetate and to a lesser degree with pyro-catechol, hydroquinone, and hexylresorcinol (Caron and Calnan 1962 Keil 1962).
