It appears justifiable to propose mechanisms for the formation of the monomeric and dimeric products of the alkaline hydrogenation of lignin. 

Hydrogenation of lignin as a means of increasing the accessibility of cellulose to penetrating agents is more costly than the other approaches, but the lignin byproducts may cover the cost of processing (20, 28).
