Hydrogen migration, multiple reaction

Heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions proceed in a pathway of elementary steps that involve mass transfer of reactant molecules to the catalyst surface, adsorption and migration of reactant molecules on the catalyst surface to active sites, reaction conversion to the product on catalyst surface and then desorption of product molecules from the catalyst surface. In other fields of kinetics, the principle is particularly useful in two situations for pathways with repetitive, consecutive addition reactions such as multiple ethoxylation or paraffin oxidation (see examples in Section 5.5) and for networks with coupled parallel steps, as in olefin reactions such as hydrogenation, hydroformylation, and hydrocyanation that involve double-bond migration in concert with conversion to products [17]. Fatty acid compounds usually contain single or multiple double bonds with varying E/Z geometries. Under hydroformylation conditions, they can be hydrogenated before hydroformylation takes place [21]. A special problem is Z/ isomerization or the migration of double bonds, since most hydroformylation catalysts are also active isomerization catalysts. Isomerization may take place before, during, or after (multiple double bonds ) the reaction with syngas.
