Hydrogen intermolecular/intramolecular

The ene reaction as a reaction principle has been first recognized and systematically investigated by Alder It is a thermal addition reaction of a double bond species 2—the enophile—and an alkene 1—the ene—that has at least one allylic hydrogen. The intramolecular variant is of greater synthetic importance than is the intermolecular reaction. [Pg.104]

Irradiation of the polymer in air prior to grafting introduces hydroperoxide groups in the backbone polymer by the intermolecular, intramolecular, or hydrogen abstraction process. [Pg.492]

The term polymer is derived from the Greek words poly and meros, meaning many parts. We noted in the last section that the existence of these parts was acknowledged before the nature of the interaction which held them together was known. Today we realize that ordinary covalent bonds are the intramolecular forces which keep the polymer molecule intact. In addition, the usual type of intermolecular forces—hydrogen bonds, dipole-dipole interactions, and London forces—hold assemblies of these molecules together in the bulk state. The only thing that is remarkable about these molecules is their size, but that feature is remarkable indeed. [Pg.3]

Miscellaneous Reactions. Ahyl alcohol can be isomerized to propionaldehyde [123-38-6] in the presence of sohd acid catalyst at 200—300°C. When copper or alumina is used as the catalyst, only propionaldehyde is obtained, because of intramolecular hydrogen transfer. On the other hand, acrolein and hydrogen are produced by a zinc oxide catalyst. In this case, it is considered that propionaldehyde is obtained mainly by intermolecular hydrogen transfer between ahyl alcohol and acrolein (31). [Pg.74]

The tertiary amine is formed in a similar manner from the imine and a secondary amine. This side reaction can be minimized by carrying out the hydrogenation in the presence of ammonia, which tends to shift the equiHbrium back towards the imine. When a compound with two or more nitrile groups is hydrogenated, the formation of both cycHc and acycHc secondary and tertiary amines is possible, depending on whether the side reaction is intramolecular or intermolecular. For example, for the hydrogenation of adiponitfile ... [Pg.258]

The intermediates which are generated are free radicals. The hydrogen-atom abstraction can be either intramolecular or intermolecular. Many aromatic ketones react by hydrogen-atom abstraction, and the stable products are diols formed by coupling of the resulting a-hydroxyben2yl radicals ... [Pg.754]

Methyl salicylate is the methyl ester of o-hydroxybenzoic acid. Intramolecular (rather than intermolecular) hydrogen bonding is responsible for its relatively low boiling point. [Pg.1247]
