Alcohol molecules are polar because of the presence of the -OH group, in which the hydrogen attached to oxygen creates (within this group) a small difference in charge (Figure 15.3). Other organic molecules that are polar are carboxylic acids such as ethanoic acid (p. 237). 

It is likely that the failure to observe hydroxyl bands, when hydrogen is added to chemisorbed CO, is closely related to the failure to observe hydroxyl bands in the hydrocarbonyls. In these compounds the presence of hydrogen attached to oxygen with hydroxyl formation is definitely ruled out 20, 21).

Predict the spin-spin splitting that you would expect to observe in the NMR spectra of each compound in Problem 36. (Reminder Hydrogens attached to oxygen and nitrogen do not normally exhibit spin-spin splitting.)...
