Hydrodesulfurization capability

Thus, any processing sequence devised to hydrodesulfurize a heavy oil or residuum must be capable of accommodating the constituents which adversely affect the ability of the catalyst to function in the most efficient manner possible. 

Combined with hydrodesulfurization, the process is fully applicable to the feed preparation for fluid catalytic cracking and hydrocracking. The process is capable of using a variety of feedstocks including atmospheric and vacuum residues derived from various crude oils, oil sand, visbroken tar and so on. 

While metal complexes capable of desulfurizing or hydrodesulfurizing thiophenes are relatively numerous, homogeneous catalysts are very rare, being limited to rhodium and iridium TRIPHOS precursors that are unique in tolerating the harsh experimental conditions required for the second C-S bond cleavage of thiophenes [2 b]. 

Environmental problems have emphasized the importance of catalysts capable of removing sulfur, and hydrodesulfurization (HDS) has become a central issue in coal and petroleum refining.f " With the same [Mo2Fc2] catalyst on 7-AI2O3, Si02, Ti02, and MgO, activities for removal of sulfur from thiophene were comparable with those of commercial HDS catalysts while showing decreased H2 consumption (less butane formation).
