Hydrazine borane

Hydrazine—borane compounds are made by the reaction of sodium borohydride and a hydrazine salt in THF (23,24). The mono-(N2H4 BH ) and di-(N2H4 2BH2) adducts are obtained, depending on the reaction conditions. These compounds have been suggested as rocket fuels (25) and for chemical deposition of nickel—boron alloys on nonmetallic surfaces (see Metallic COATINGS) (26).

Hydrazine borane was proposed by Antonovich et al. (1991) as a reducing agent of intermediate strength, as compared to Sn(ll) and borotetrahydride, with the possibility to differentiate between phenylmercury and alkylmercury.

Besides AB, some of its derivatives have also been investigated for hydrogen storage, especially to overcome the previously mentioned problems. The derivatives hydrazine borane (HB) [13], guanidinium borohydride (GBH) [12], ethylenediamine bisborane (EDB) [43], methylguanidinium borohydride (Me-GBH) [44], and different alkyl amine boranes are the most interesting (Fig. 40.3) [45, 14]. Another compound class between molecular and metal hydride storage materials is that of metal amido boranes, which is not discussed in this chapter [46].
