Humors of plants

These twelve classes are organized in twelve chapters, which are subdivided into articles presenting species of substances. Bucquet mentioned in the preface to his book that it was not yet possible to use a systematic taxonomic terminology in plant chemistry, distinguishing clearly between classes, genera, and species, as he had done before in mineral chemistry. Plants are too numerous, he explained, and the analysis of plants is still little advanced (Bucquet [1773] p. iiif). Nonetheless, his organization of twelve chapters headed by the names of the humors of plants, and the subdivision of these chapters into articles, equally headed by substance names, actually implied a systematic classification. [Pg.238]
