Hume-Rothery Rules for Formation of Solid Solutions

4 HUME-ROTHERY RULES FOR FORMATION OF SOLID SOLUTIONS [Pg.30]

Hume-Rothery formulated some rules of thumb for the formation of sohd solutions (Hume-Rothery, p. 110) by comparing atomic diameters and electronegativities. The rules are sununarized as follows  [Pg.30]

The compositional range for solid solutions is restricted, when the components tend to form a stable intermetallic compound. This tendency increases with increasing difference of electronegativities. [Pg.31]

Several improvements of these primary rules were suggested in the literature and have been summarized by Villars or Alonso.  [Pg.32]
