Homogeneous performance

For assessing the homogenizing performance of a blending bed, the following F>arameters will be considered.

An even less complicated reaction vessel may be used for reactions in liquid amtnonia which produce only a small amount of "heat" over a relatively long period and which proceed under homogeneous conditions. The conversion can then be performed in a one-necked flask with a stopper + gas outlet or small hole. 

Fabrication. Acetal resins are most commonly fabricated by injection mol ding. A homogeneous melt is essential for optimum appearance and for performance of injection molded parts. A screw compression ratio of no less than 3 1 is advised and the size of the injection molded shot should be 50 to 75% of the rated capacity (based on polystyrene) of the barrel. 

Nitrations can be performed in homogeneous media, using tetramethylene sulfone or nitromethane (nitroethane) as solvent. A large variety of aromatic compounds have been nitrated with nitronium salts in excellent yields in nonaqueous media. Sensitive compounds, otherwise easily hydroly2ed or oxidized by nitric acid, can be nitrated without secondary effects. Nitration of aromatic compounds is considered an irreversible reaction. However, the reversibihty of the reaction has been demonstrated in some cases, eg, 9-nitroanthracene, as well as pentamethylnitrobenzene transnitrate benzene, toluene, and mesitylene in the presence of superacids (158) (see Nitration). 

Pump Suction. The net positive suction head required (NPSHR) affects the resistance on the suction side of the pump. If it drops to or near the vapor pressure of the fluid being handled, cavitation and loss of performance occurs (13). The NPSHR is affected by temperature and barometric pressure and is of most concern on evaporator CIP units where high cleaning temperatures might be used. A centrifugal booster pump may be installed on a homogenizer or on the intake of a timing pump to prevent low suction pressures. 

Ester plasticizers are used mainly in very polar elastomers, such as neoprene and nitrile mbber, to improve low or high temperature performance or impart particular oil or solvent resistance to a compound 5—40 parts are commonly used (see Plasticizers). Resins and tars are added to impart tack, soften the compound, improve flow, and in some cases improve filler wetting out, as is the case with organic resins in mineral-filled SBR. Resinous substances are also used as processing agents for homogenizing elastomer blends.
