We applied the hole digging method to several samples of molecular clusters and quantum spin glasses. The most detailed study has been done on the Fe8 system. We found the predicted square-root t relaxation, Eq. (11), in experiments on fully saturated Fe8 crystals [16, 79] and on nonsaturated samples [34]. Figure 22 analyzes the dipolar distributions, revealing a remarkable structure due to next-nearest-neighbor effects [34]. These results are in good agreement with simulations [80, 55]. [Pg.175]

Snake-holing. Blasting method for removing deeply buried boulders or rocks. It consists of digging a hole under the boulder and placing a Dynamite charge immediately below it. As the expl charge is confined by the earth, when detonated, it will exert sufficient force on the... [Pg.377]

The entire procedure is then repeated many times but at other fields //frobe yielding rshort (Hz, Hdig, tdig) which is related to the distribution of spins P(HZ, Hdtg, 7dig) that are still free for tunneling after the hole digging. For tA = 0, this method maps out the initial distribution. [Pg.174]

Where a substantial amount of excavation is required in the danger zone, it is advisable to dig one or more trial holes to find the cable and then work along it from the trial holes to expose it. Careful manual methods should be used to avoid damage to the cable. Surface construction may require the use of power tools to break up the surface for removal, in whieh ease it is advisable to fit the bit with a collar to prevent deep penetration and no drilling should be done immediately above the cable. Sharp-pointed tools sueh as pieks should not be used immediately adjacent to the cable even if it is armoured, as the pick points are capable of penetrating between the strands of wire armour and through badly corroded steel tape. [Pg.196]
